Introduction to Ego
The ego. We all have one, and we all rely on it in some way, whether we’re aware of it or not. But what exactly is the ego? At its core, it’s the part of us that creates our sense of self—the "I" that we think we are. It shapes how we see ourselves and interact with the world. But here’s the thing: while the ego can help us get through life, it can also hold us back in ways we might not always notice. When we identify too strongly with it, we start to define ourselves by things like success, social status, or the image we project to others. We forget that we’re so much more than these labels. The ego can be transcended, though, and when we do, we get a glimpse of a deeper connection with ourselves and everything around us. The Ego's Role in Shaping Our Identity From the moment we’re born, the ego starts to take shape. It’s the lens through which we begin to understand who we are—the name we go by, our history, and the experiences that make us "us." As we grow older, though, we start tying our worth to these external identities. We define ourselves by what we achieve, how we look, or how others see us. It’s like putting on a mask to protect a part of us that feels fragile. But when we get too attached to this mask, we lose sight of our true essence. We start to feel disconnected from who we really are. We begin living for validation from others instead of finding peace within ourselves. This is where things like anxiety, insecurity, and fear creep in, and we start chasing things that don’t really fulfill us. Ego Dissolution: Experiences Beyond the Self The idea of ego dissolution might sound strange at first, but it’s something we’ve all likely experienced, whether we realize it or not. It’s that moment when our sense of self fades away and we’re no longer caught up in the “I” that we usually cling to. It can happen during deep introspection, meditation, or during psychedelic experiences where the boundaries between us and the universe dissolve. For me, my Salvia divinorum experiences have been some of the most eye-opening. I remember one moment when I felt completely consumed by the universe, as if I wasn’t me anymore. I wasn’t Callan anymore—It was just this raw, unfiltered form of existence. In that space, there was no ego, no identity. Everything made sense, and it was like I was remembering something forgotten. It was a powerful reminder that there’s something bigger than us—a universal connection that transcends the ego. That moment showed me how much we’re all part of something much greater.

The Ego as a Tool for Growth
Here’s the thing: the ego isn’t inherently bad. In fact, I’d argue it’s both your best friend and your worst enemy. It’s essential for navigating the world, helping us make decisions, set goals, and form relationships. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to make sense of the world or carve out our place in it. But, like anything, the ego can get distorted. When it inflates, we get caught in a cycle of self-obsession—chasing approval, material success, or recognition, thinking these things will fill some void. The problem is, that’s a game we can never win. The more we seek from the ego, the less fulfilling it becomes. The key is learning to recognize when the ego is serving us and when it’s holding us back. When we can observe the ego without identifying with it, we shift the balance. Instead of letting it control us, we can use it as a tool for growth—a guide that helps us navigate life with awareness, not one that turns us into mindless robots, trapped in a cycle of endless pursuit. The problem with this chase is that it doesn’t even fulfill us or make us happy in the end. Letting Go of the Ego: A Path to Authenticity True authenticity comes when we let go of the ego’s grip. When we stop caring so much about how others perceive us, and start living in alignment with our true self, we find a sense of peace and connection that transcends the external world. By releasing the layers of identity we’ve built up over the years, we can tap into a deeper sense of who we truly are, beyond all the roles we play in life. This isn’t about erasing the ego or pretending it doesn’t exist. It’s about understanding it, stepping back from it, and realizing that it doesn’t define us. We are more than the labels we attach to ourselves. By embracing this truth, we open ourselves up to living more freely, authentically, and connected to the world around us. The Ego's Role in the Bigger Picture So, where does the ego fit into the bigger picture? It’s part of the journey — a tool for understanding ourselves and navigating life. But it’s not the whole story. Beyond the ego lies a deeper, more universal connection to everything around us. When we can see the ego for what it is — just a part of the experience — we can begin to live more authentically and embrace the interconnectedness of all things. The ego might be the lens through which we view the world, but it doesn’t have to be the lens through which we define ourselves. Want to go deeper with Salvia divinorum? Check out my other blogs:

AuthorHi, I’m Callan Hansen—just a guy driven by curiosity and a passion for exploring the deeper layers of existence. I started making games at 10, mostly because it was fun, but over time, it turned into something much bigger—a way to help people connect with parts of themselves they might not even realize are there. Beyond game development, my experiences with Salvia Divinorum have opened my mind to some eye-opening ideas about reality, connection, and the things we can’t always see or explain. A Quick Note About This Blog and My Book:Just so you know, everything you read here comes from my personal experiences, but I’ve used AI to help me get my thoughts across more clearly. It’s just a tool that helps me organize what I want to say, but the ideas and stories are all from me. I wanted to be upfront about how things came together. Thanks for taking the time to read my journey—I really appreciate it.
